Origin and History

As the name suggests, the American Bobtail has its origin from the wild bobcat. It is believed that breeding between the domestic tabby and the wild bobcat resulted in the Bobtail cat.

The original bloodlines were created by mating brown male Yodie and seal-point Siamese. Most of these original bloodlines have passed away. The change in the appearance of the tail in American Bobtail is due to frequent mutations in genes seen in the domestic cats. The International Cat Association (TICA) recognized the American Bobtail as a breed in the year 1989.

The origin of American Wirehair is a bit surprise for everyone. It is not a result of breeding methods but due to genetic mutation. A genetic variation in the litter of a cat breed called American Shorthair made the beginning of this breed.

A male kitten in the litter of American Shorthair had a unique wire-like fur. This kitten, along with his littermates, were inbred that resulted in today’s American Wirehair. The American Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) recognized this breed in 1967.

Appearance

The American Bobtails are uncommon breeds in the USA. They have short tail and appearance similar to the wild bobcat. Their hind legs are longer than the front with round feet along with toe tufts. Eyes are almond-shaped, and their color will vary depending on the color of the coat.

The ears are medium-sized with a broad base and rounded tips. Other physical characteristics include broad muzzle, prominent whisker pads, wide nose, and powerful jaws.

The American Wirehair has almost similar features like the Shorthair except for the wiry coat. They have a dense and textured wirehaired coat, which one of the characteristic features of this cat. The coating often gives a ripple-like appearance.

The eyes are round, which is slightly turned upward. Eye color will vary depending on the coat color. Unlike the Bobtail, the Wirehair’s ears are small and rounded. But the standard features are prominent whisker pads, strong jaws, and bulky pads.

The American Bobtail is larger and muscular than the Wirehair. The usual height and weight of these cats are:

Bobtail’s shedding is moderate and may or may not require regular grooming, whereas the Wirehair has minimal shedding and does not require regular grooming.

Behavior and Temperament

Both cats are very affectionate towards their family. The Wirehair is a bit more attached to its family, whereas the Bobtail can be independent. Both these cats are friendly with kids and other pets.

As these two are moderate energy cats, they often spend their time sleeping or cleaning themselves. The American Bobtail tends to vocalize more than the Wirehair. Both the breeds are highly intelligent, and they always manage to seek attention by hopping on to your laps.

The American Bobtail is often used as a therapy cat due to their friendliness towards strangers.  They are also used as travel companions, and you can train them to walk on a leash.

The Wirehair has a prey drive. It can chase other small animals such as mice or little birds. Sometimes these cats will gift its hunt to their owners since they consider humans as a family. If the cat stays indoors, make sure to provide plenty of pets to inhibit its prey drive.

Lifespan and Health Problems

The American Bobtail and the American Wirehair are very healthy cats with no genetic predisposition to diseases. One of the most common conditions seen in the Bobtail is the spinal issue due to its short tail. It will result in uncontrolled bowel movements and fecal leaks (fecal incontinence).

On the other hand, the Wirehair will suffer from wax build-up in their hair and ears. You must keep a constant check and clean them whenever required.

The life expectancy of Bobtail is 13 – 15 years and Wirehair is 14 – 20 years.

Diet

Cats are carnivores, and their diet will depend on their age, health, and physical activity. Give them high-quality protein food. Since cats tend to eat the right amount of food you feed, obesity can occur.

Make sure you follow a proper diet chart. Diabetes is another common problem seen in cats. You can diagnose diabetes early if your cat has excessive thirst and urination, increased appetite, and weight loss.

If you are not sure about the diet plan, contact your nearest vet immediately.

Which One Suits You the Best?

The American Bobtail vs American Wirehair is a unique comparison we did here. It is not because they are „American,” but because they have a lot of common features. They are friendly, docile, loving, and very affectionate towards their owners.

You can have either of them, and even first-timers can do good. If you take necessary precautions for their health and diet, both breeds are suggestible. If you are a frequent traveler and would like to take your pet along with you, the American Bobtail is suggestible.

The American Wirehairs are very rare and can be hard to find. And, you can’t leave a Wirehair alone for too long because of their predatory instincts. If you can manage to get one, pride yourself because you got a rare cat breed.
